This breed is not very old; it appeared in the beginning of the 19th century in Germany from a local boar-hunting hound. Later, these canines were crossed with the English Bulldog. In spite of such fierce ancestry, this breed is very friendly and loyal. Purebred representatives of this breed should be medium-sized and square built. They should possess strong limbs, and short, tight-fitting coat. The gait should be firm, the carriage proud. Being very intelligent, these animals make wonderful pets for active people and for families with children.

These are muscular, short-coated, square-headed canines, characterized by the slightly pushed in top of the muzzle, and a broad nose. Males stand 22.5-25 inches at the withers and weigh about 70 pounds. Females are slightly smaller, measuring 21-23.5 inches and weighing about 60 pounds. These dogs have a short coat that needs a regular wipe-down and an occasional bath. The only acceptable body color in this breed is fawn.
